RFID Update about IBM and IP

IBM has announced that Intermec will embed IBM's WebSphere RFID Device Infrastructure into the Intermec IF5 reader, enhancing its functionality and intelligence. The idea of "pushing intelligence to the edge" of an RFID implementation is a popular one, because it reduces the amount of RFID-generated data traveling over the network and distributes some of the computing burden from central servers out to the readers.

International Paper has changed the name of its Smart Packaging Business to ASURYS. The company wanted a name that suggested more than just packaging. "Putting tags on boxes is an important part of what we focus on, but we also specialize in helping clients maximize security, visibility and efficiency in their supply chains," said Alan Clark, general manager of ASURYS. "We believe the change speaks to our commitment as a long-term participant in the RFID industry, while opening the door for growth opportunities."
