Al Gore, Venture Capitalist - Mergers, Acquisitions, Venture Capital, Hedge Funds -- DealBook - New York Times: "Add another line to Al Gore’s ever-expanding resume.

The former vice president, documentary film maker, Nobel laureate and Apple board member has taken a position as a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, the venture capital firm that invested early in Google, Netscape and Amazon.com. Mr. Gore will play a high-profile role in the firm’s “clean tech” investment efforts, a move spearheaded by his longtime friend L. John Doerr.

As part of the arrangement, Mr. Gore will donate his salary as a Kleiner Perkins partner to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a nonprofit advocacy group he founded. Mr. Doerr will in turn join the board of Generation Investment Management, a $1 billion investment firm Mr. Gore founded with David Blood, a former Goldman Sachs partner.

Many news stories reported that Mr. Gore intends to take an active role as a Kleiner Perkins partner. That stands in contrast to former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who has made little noise since being named a “strategic limited partner” two years ago.

Kleiner Perkins, based in Menlo Park, Calif., last year earmarked $100 million of its $600 million investment fund to startups that work on reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The firm expects to dedicate one-third of new funding to clean tech by 2009."
