Intellectual Capital for the Transition

Bioproducts accounted for 10 percent of the world’s agrochemical market in 2005. The roadmap emphasizes biorefineries or bioprocesses integrated with existing processes as well as the products from these processes, rather than species selection or genetically modified organisms.

INTERNATIONAL BIOTECHNOLOGY MICROBIOLOGY INNOVATIONS

By their integrative nature, bio-innovations blur the lines between bio-based products and traditional chemical processes.

This emphasis on biorefineries implies a focus on critical crop characteristics, leading to regionally differentiated designs and possibly reducing global reliance on insecticides and pesticides.

  • new regionalism
  • new localism
  • distributed production
  • new production strategies

Canada, Finland, Sweden, USA, Central Europe, etc. do posses the intellectual capability and demonstrated capacity in three levels of biosynthesis covered in this initial roadmap:

  1. biocatalysis via enzymes on a surface,
  2. fermentation (whole-cell catalysis by a single cell) and biosynthesis in multicellular organisms.

WHAT KIND OF COMPANIES ARE INVOLVED?

Private research in biotechnologies and acquisitions of bio-based companies is converting “chemical companies” to “life sciences companies.”

Among the industry leaders in these conversions are DuPont, Dow, Hoechst, Rhône-Poulenc, Novartis and Monsanto as well as leading pharmaceutical manufacturers.
