Intec Fluidised Bed Firing


The fluidised bed firing promises efficient combustion of low-quality fuels. A wide range of fuels can be used for firing, with high efficiency.

Instead of a grate, the combustion chamber is filled with a bed of inert material (e.g. sand). Air is blown into the bed from underneath through nozzles in order to fluidise the bed.

The fluidised bed and the combustion chamber are heated to the fuel ignition temperature and then fuel and distributed in the bed. The fuel catches fire and burns.

Complete burnout takes place in the combustion chamber above the bed. Heating surfaces immersed in an adjacent fluidised bed conduct usable heat out of the bed material.

Fluidized bed technology - and circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers in particular - lies at the heart of our know-how and product offering.

Foster Wheeler has an approximately 40% share of the world market for CFB boilers.

The annual net revenue of Foster Wheeler Energia Oy is around €126 million and company employs some 450 people in Varkaus and in Espoo. The Group is part of Foster Wheeler Ltd., a global engineering and construction contractor and energy equipment supplier.

Research and development department is responsible of process development of the boiler and gasifier technologies. Especially we are focusing on combustion and gasification processes based on fluidized bed technologies. They are expanding their R&D.
